Lilacs I was hungry, had to pee, from too much caffeine, trying to stay awake during the sermon, about treasure hidden in a field; my arms blossomed goosebumps, reacting to the sanctuary AC. We stepped outside, heat mirages smeared the blacktop, along with the shoes of a line of zombie parishioners. The fragrance hit us both at once, the smell of Eve’s hair just washed; we turned toward each other and gasped in unison, "Lilacs!" Suddenly, I came to, like when you find a coin that’s been missing, or see an old friend you haven’t seen for ages. I looked around for the lilac bush, but it was nowhere in my field of vision, so I gave up trying. We walked to the car, shut our doors, set the thermostat to 65, – started driving.
