Lilacs

2
Lilacs

I was hungry, had to pee,
from too much caffeine,
trying to stay awake during the sermon,
about treasure hidden in a field;
my arms blossomed goosebumps,
reacting to the sanctuary AC.

We stepped outside,
heat mirages smeared the blacktop,
along with the shoes of a line of
zombie parishioners.

The fragrance hit us both at once,
the smell of Eve’s hair just washed;
we turned toward each other
and gasped in unison, "Lilacs!"

Suddenly, I came to,
like when you find a coin
that’s been missing,
or see an old friend
you haven’t seen for ages.

I looked around for the lilac bush,
but it was nowhere in
my field of vision,
so I gave up trying.

We walked to the car,
shut our doors,
set the thermostat to 65,
– started driving.
